New Saints Row game: THQ ceases DLC plan in favour of full sequel

'The Next Great Sequel' due 2013; Enter The Dominatrix plans shelved

Publisher THQ has ceased plans to release a DLC package for Saints Row the Third, instead opting to enhance the content as a standalone game due for release in 2013.

Developer Volition, which was working on the DLC content called Enter The Dominatrix, is now incorporating the code into a project tentatively titled 'The Next Great Sequel in the Saints Row Franchise'.

The new game is due for release next year, likely after April. THQ said it will lose about $20 million in sales from abandoning plans to release the Saints Row DLC this year, though the gamble is that it will accumulate far more the next fiscal.

The switch from DLC to full game appears to be the first significant decision made by THQ's new company president Jason Rubin.

"When I looked at the Enter The Dominatrix expansion in production at Volition, I was blown away by the ideas and desire to expand the fiction of the franchise," he said.

"I asked the team what it could achieve given more time, more resources, and a broader scope for the project. We all agreed we wanted to play that game. When it comes to Saints Row, it's clear our fans want bigger, better, and even more over the top, and that's why Enter The Dominatrix will now be incorporated into a vastly expanded, full-fledged sequel, scheduled for calendar 2013."

"We believe the potential for this sequel is far greater as a full-priced, full-length, high quality, connected experience."
