Italy midfielder Andrea Pirlo helped sink England's hopes in the Euro 2012 quarter-final last night with an extraordinary penalty kick.
The Juventus star, 33, was the player of the match in a game that Italy largely dominated. But England held out for 120 minutes to force a penalty shoot-out, with fans' hopes jumping to stupefying heights as England edged ahead 2-1.
Yet up stepped Pirlo, faced with the prospect of pushing Italy ever further out of the tournament, who coolly chipped the ball down the centre as if he was on the training pitch.
