Sony: 'Retail will be important for PS4'

Don't expect the platform holder to give up on the High Street by going digital-only next-gen

Despite its recent $380 million acquisition of streaming service Gaikai, Sony says retail will play a key role in the success of PlayStation 4.

MCV reports that in the last 12 months alone the number of UK specialist retail game stores has fallen by 300, but SCE UK boss Fergal Gara told the site that the company expects to remain heavily committed to the High Street when the next generation arrives.

"Coming down off that 2008 peak has been a steep ride for many and has involved fallout on many levels, not least of all retail," he acknowledged.

"We'd love to see as many of those retailers as possible maintain their interest in servicing the space because clearly down the road many of us are going to be doing our best to give another injection into the market whenever the next cycle starts."

Sony has admitted it would be "undesirable" to let Xbox 720 get a significant head start on PS4, but SCE America CEO Jack Tretton said last month that quality is more important than getting to market first. "We've never been first, we've never been cheapest, it's about being best," the exec stated.
