Gearbox: Brothers in Arms Furious 4 'has evolved'

Studio executive Randy Pitchford expects fans will be 'surprised' by the shooter's new direction

The CEO of longstanding independent studio Gearbox has reaffirmed his commitment to the delayed Brothers in Arms Furious 4, following speculation over the project's status.

Randy Pitchford, who co-founded the Texas studio in the late '90s, says development on the game is "going great" and expects people to be surprised by the different track it has taken.

"I'm looking forward to being able to talk about Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 soon," Pitchford told CVG when asked on the status of the project.

"The game has evolved, I think people are going to be surprised by what they'll see, and it's still evolving. One of the reasons why we're not talking about it now is that it's evolving and we need to make further changes before we can start talking about it."

The game, expected to be published by Ubisoft, was first revealed at E3 in June 2011, but despite the interest that the original Furious Four trailer generated, news updates on the project wound down and led some to speculate on the status of the project.

Unfounded rumours of project cancellation intensified in May when it was discovered that Ubisoft and Gearbox's joint trademark application for the game had been rejected (it has since emerged that the USPTO rejection was solely due to dual-applicants of the same trademark - Gearbox is now filing individually).

Pitchford confirmed to CVG that the game will not meet the 2012 release date that was originally set last year.

"I can't really talk about Furious Four right now," he said.

"Borderlands 2 ships in September, so we're spending most of our time talking about that, and Aliens Colonial Marines comes out after that in February.

"I might come around to talk about Furious Four between the releases of Borderlands 2 and Aliens: Colonial Marines, but certainly I won't before the release of Borderlands 2."

The original concept for Furious Four - which now may have changed - was a co-op focused game set at the final stages of World War II.
Ubisoft's 2011 press release read: "The story follows four fierce and fearless warriors tracking the Führer himself. As one of the Furious 4, players will use special weaponry and unexpected combat abilities to fight the greatest threat the world has ever faced: an experimental Nazi army conceived in secret by the Third Reich."
