Polytron won't pay for Fez patch

Game-breaking bug affects 'less than 1% of players'

Phil Fish's indie studio Polytron has announced it will not be releasing a new patch for its XBLA game Fez due to what it deems exorbitant costs.

The game, released in April, features a critical bug that can corrupt save files - but the Canada studio responsible for the errors says Microsoft is charging too much for fixes to the game.


"Microsoft would charge us tens of thousands of dollars to re-certify the game," read a statement from the studio.

Sales figures for Fezare not public, but Polytron previously said it sold more than 100,000 copies of the game, which cost customers 800 MS points (around £7 / $11).

Polytron insists that the blame is with Microsoft. In a statement released on its website, the company said:

"Had Fez been released on steam instead of XBLA, the game would have been fixed two weeks after release, at no cost to us. And if there was an issue with that patch, we could have fixed that right away too."

It also claims that the save file bug only affects "less than one per cent" of players.

The group admitted: "It's a shitty numbers game to be playing for sure, but as a small independent, paying so much money for patches makes no sense at all."

It added: "We believe the save file corruption issue mostly happened to players who had completed, or almost completed the game. If you hadn't already seen most of what Fez had to offer, your save file is probably safe. It doesn't happen if you start a new game."

The firm's original patch, which was initially pulled because of the save file bug, will now be reissued. The patch is said will improve framerate issues and other matters.

"To the less-than-1% who are getting screwed, we sincerely apologise," the studio said.
