Day 19 - Fredas, 4th of Hearthfire
We decide to explore the countryside around Dawnstar. It's mostly wolves, snow foxes, and elk. We have a pretty successful hunt, and end up with a pile of pelts to flog. But after yesterday's treasure discovery, this seems like spare change. We're getting increasingly frustrated with our quest. Olaf's save file has just hit fifteen hours, and we're still miles away for our goal.
In the wilderness we stumble upon another giant camp. Last time Olaf encountered one of these he was almost clubbed to death. But as we approach, a group of bandits move in. They're trying to fight the giants, and a fight breaks out. While the big guys are distracted, we dash through their camp and look for stuff to loot. We find a couple of bags of mammoth cheese (mmm!) and skim some from the top. They won't miss it, and we can eat it for dinner.
On the way back to Dawnstar, we bag a few more elk. Over the last 19 days we've tried pretty much every legitimate way to make money in Skyrim, and we're starting to get bored. We've done smithing, alchemy, hunting, chopping wood... what else is there? We consider manufacturing skooma and becoming a drug dealer, but the game doesn't allow it.
We reach town and sell our pelts and other spoils. We get a decent amount of coin for the lot, and eat a bowl of mammoth cheese to celebrate. We think about poor old Gilfre sat at home on her own. We consider walking back to Mixwater Mill to spend the night with her, but it's ages away and the sun is starting to set. We rent a room at the inn instead. Sorry, love.
Day 20 - Loredas, 5th of Hearthfire
Mining in Dawnstar was a financial success, so we decide to do some more. We walk to Windhelm, then take the carriage back to Markarth. We'll be staying away from The Reach this time after our encounter with the Hagraven a few days ago. There's a mine just outside Markarth, so we head there as soon as our carriage arrives outside the city walls.
Left Hand Mine is an iron mine, sadly, and there are only a handful of veins. It's a pretty pathetic haul of ore, but we smelt it anyway and sell the ingots to the blacksmith in Markarth. While we're in town, we decide to go for a wander. Last time we were here we didn't really explore that much. Maybe we can get some easy jobs from the locals?
Most of the houses are locked, but one isn't: a place belonging to a fella called Endon. We poke our head inside, but he's nowhere to be seen. His daughter is there, but she has nothing useful to say. Before we leave we explore the house and something catches our eye.
Next to a huge pile of expensive-looking silverware, we spot two locked display cases. Inside of each are piles of jewel-studded necklaces and rings. They're probably worth an absolute fortune, and suddenly we're overcome with feelings of absolute evil. Olaf could spend the next year chopping wood and mining iron ore, and he'd still be no closer to 25k. But if this stuff just, er, 'fell into' his pocket, he might have a better chance...
Dun dun dun! What will Olaf do? Will he give in to his evil urges? This is the last written diary from the Rags to Riches series, but you can still follow Olaf's misadventures on YouTube.
