Investigation into some PS Vita units 'burning during charge'

Sony claims issue is result of improper use

State officials in Japan have launched an investigation into alleged occurrences of the PlayStation Vita system burning up during recharge.

Sony has said the issue is not the fault of the hardware but instead the outcome of improper charging. There have been no reports of injury.

The platform holder has been notified of 31 incidents of the handheld burning up since it launched in December. It is said that 23 malfunctions occurred in Japan while another eight took place across North America, the United Kingdom and Australia.

A spokesperson for Sony told Japan publication Yomiuri that the problem "is not related to a product malfunction and will thus not result in a recall".

According to a translation of the statement published on Andriasang, Sony believes that the problem "is with people having liquids or other objects inserted in the connection".
