Funcom to focus on smaller games after disappointing Secret World sales

New brand struggles in the face of Guild Wars and WoW competition

Funcom is to focus on smaller, more focused games following disappointing early sales of MMO The Secret World.

The Norwegian company said in a financial update that it "will concentrate its new development on more focused, systems-driven games that have a high degree of community and player interaction" as "these games require less time and development cost to bring to market".

Funcom has sold over 200,000 copies of The Secret World since the PC title launched at the beginning of July, a total the firm described as "below expectations". It said the announcement of a Guild Wars 2 release date and a World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria release date around The Secret World's launch period "impacted sales" of the new brand.

In comparison, Guild Wars 2 hit one million pre-release sales ahead of yesterday's launch, and had 400,000 peak concurrent users during its headstart phase over the weekend.

Funcom recently delayed the release of The Secret World's second DLC update following staff cuts which reportedly affected approximately half of its global workforce. Originally planned for release on August 28, Issue 2: Digging Deeper will now launch on September 11.
