Digital follow-up returns to the Old West

Developer Techland has officially announced Call of Juarez: Gunslinger, a digital follow-up to last year's The Cartel.

Set for release on PC, Xbox Live Arcade and PSN in 'early 2013', Gunslinger returns the Ubisoft FPS series to its traditional Old West setting, after the last game's brief flirting period with the modern day.

According to Joystiq, the latest instalment features stylish, frantic shooting backed up by plenty of points-building and RPG elements.

These numerical rewards are used to upgrade skills and improve your shooting, with quicker reload times and recoil bonuses up for grabs. See the first trailer below.

The new entry is the fourth in the Western FPS franchise, following 2006's Call of Juarez, 2009's Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood and 2011's Call of Juarez: The Cartel.

The Cartel currently has Metascores of 47 on PS3 and Xbox 360, and 45 on PC - but still better than the 3/10 we gave it in our Call of Juarez: The Cartel review, in which we said: "An inept shooter that manages to make Duke Nukem Forever look like Modern Warfare."

Alongside Gunslinger, Techland is currently working on Dead Island: Riptide and the newly revealed hack and slash fantasy game Project Hell.
