With World of Warcraft's Mists of Pandaria still in closed beta, the competition can breathe easy this term. The obvious threat in terms of the newcomers is The Old Republic, but there are a raft of exciting other pretenders - new and old - too. Hardcore MMO types, make your feelings known here! So here are the contenders...
World of Tanks
The world apparently loves tanks. Wargaming's multiplayer trundler - best described as Counter-Strike with tanks - has blossomed into an online behemoth. Metal beastie go BOOM!
Runescape's been running since 2001, and in that time has racked up a stupid number of players: it's in the Guinness book of world records as the world's most popular free MMORPG.
Rift's now free-to-play to level 20, but asks a sub fee after that. The game takes place in fantasy land Telara, where titular rifts keep opening up and spewing monsters.
League of Legends
Riot Games' DOTA-alike multiplayer online battle arena pitches two teams of five heroes against each other. It's enjoyed rampant success, notching up a staggering 30 million-odd registered players.
The Secret World
Funcom's MMORPG is set in a world where all myths, legends, conspiracy theories and urban stories are true. Players choose one of three factions to join: Illuminati, Templar, or the Dragon.
