PlayStation boss 'thinks division will be profitable this year'

Company pegging hopes on new PS3 as handhelds underperform

Sony Computer Entertainment president Andrew House thinks the PlayStation division will turn a profit in the current business year ending March 31, 2013.

According to Reuters, Sony's games unit is pegging its profit hopes on PS3 as weak handheld sales "threaten to undermine a business the company's CEO is banking on to help return his company to profit".

"I think we will be profitable this year," PlayStation boss House said at the Tokyo Game Show yesterday. "We have a growing installed base, growing connectivity of the PS3."

The PlayStation business posted an operating profit of 29 billion yen (£229m/$371m) in the year ended March 31, 2012.

Yesterday Sony revealed a new PS3. Set for release next week, the console is 20 per cent smaller and 25 per cent lighter than PS3 Slim.
