Many good things have been said about the upcoming Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, and if you can't wait for it you can pre-order an early unit now.
Early pre-orders for the Rift Developer Kit - which includes a prototype of the head unit and the SDK for software development - can now be placed on the official site by anyone who fancies dropping the $300 asking price for the pleasure. Orders are expected to ship in January 2013.
Previously only those who donated a wad of cash to the Rift Kickstarter fund were promised these early units.
Although it's still in development - and the dev kits are intended more for developers than eager consumers - Oculus has already gained support of two major games; free-to-play mech shooter Hawken, and id's enhanced re-release Doom 3: BFG Edition.
id's John Carmack, who has publicly and enthusiastically endorsed the device since E3 earlier this year, has also confirmed that Doom 4 will fully support it.
