Facebook surpassed one billion monthly active users on September 14, founder Mark Zuckerberg has announced.
That's up from the 500 million users reached in July 2010, 100 million in August 2008, 50 million in October 2007 and 25 million in January 2006.
The social networking phenomenon launched in February 2004, with its membership initially limited by its founders to fellow Harvard students.
Zuckerberg says the site has now seen over 1.13 trillion likes (a feature since February 2009), 140.3 billion friend connections, 219 billion photos uploaded, and 17 billion location-tagged posts, including check-ins.
"Helping a billion people connect is amazing, humbling and by far the thing I am most proud of in my life," Zuckerberg said.
"I am committed to working every day to make Facebook better for you, and hopefully together one day we will be able to connect the rest of the world too."
