Microsoft Points no longer mandatory in Windows 8

Change may support reports of virtual currency phase out on Xbox 360

Windows 8 will allow users to pay for game, movie and music content with a credit card instead of forcing them to use Microsoft Points, as it did in the beta.

According to The Verge, Microsoft's new operating system features the option to pay using Points alongside real money transactions.

Although the change currently only applies to Windows 8, the phasing out of Microsoft's virtual currency could soon carry over to Xbox 360.

In January a report suggested Microsoft will be dropping the use of 'Points' on Xbox Live by the end of 2012. It was said that the change would apply to Windows Phone too.

Microsoft later labelled the brief appearance of real money items on Xbox Live Marketplace an "error", adding that it has no immediate plans to phase out MS Points.
