Fight Club and Se7en director David Fincher is executive producing the Halo 4 launch trailer, which will be directed by Tim Miller, the visual effects lead on Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Titled Scanned, the trailer will deliver "an emotionally-charged" look at the back story of series protagonist Master Chief, according to Microsoft.
An extended two-minute version will make its world premiere on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon on October 18, and be available on Halo Waypoint and the Xbox YouTube channel immediately following the broadcast.
Miller said: "Halo is one of the most iconic sci-fi universes, with a depth that allows for amazingly cinematic and emotionally riveting stories.
"The chance to tell a story that explores never-before-seen facets of Master Chief's journey is an honor. Our goal is to deliver a blockbuster, Hollywood-quality trailer that raises the bar for the award-winning legacy of live-action Halo storytelling and gets fans stoked for the return of Master Chief."
Microsoft says the Halo series has sold more than 43 million game units worldwide and generated more than $3 billion in sales.
The publisher has confirmed a Halo 4 release date of November 6.
