[UPDATE] Wii U owners report mandatory 5GB firmware update

Huge day one update for Wii U

The Wii U launched in America over the weekend, and Twitter has seen a flurry of updates from owners who weren't able to play their new console for up to four hours while it performed a mammoth firmware update.

Eurogamer's Wii U review informs us that the the day one firmware update for the Wii U is in fact only 1GB, not 5GB as we reported yesterday.

Original story:

According to many Twitter users the compulsory 5GB firmware update takes between one to four hours to complete - depending on the speed of your internet connection.

As spotted by Kotaku, one owner, @LouisLamarche, posted this photo on Twitter showing the progress after half an hour.

The update in question allows users to access online features, visit the Miiverse and transfer data from a Wii to the Wii U.

Some users, such as L.A. Times reporter Ben Fritz, have tweeted that they thought the Wii U had frozen as it was going so slow, and in an attempt to turn the console off and back on again, it bricked, rendering their brand new Wii U useless.

So let that be a warning: let the firmware update run its course.
