14 games confirmed for permanent MoMA display

Total of 40 titles planned

The New York Museum of Modern Art will open a new permanent exhibition in the new year focusing on video games, with the first confirmed titles ranging 50 years of the medium's history.

The exhibition opens in March 2013 and will remain a permanent fixture at the Johnson Galleries, with the initial 14 titles expected to reach 40.

In the gallery's announcement notes, the titles were "selected as outstanding examples of interaction design - a field that MoMA has already explored and collected extensively, and one of the most important and oft-discussed expressions of contemporary design creativity."

Curators for the exhibition consulted with industry experts in order to determine which titles would be included. "Our criteria, therefore, emphasize not only the visual quality and aesthetic experience of each game, but also the many other aspects - from the elegance of the code to the design of the player's behavior - that pertain to interaction design."

The criteria for selection is detailed thoroughly on the MoMA website.
