PS2 discontinued in Japan

13 years after launch...

Sony has ceased shipping PlayStation 2 consoles to retailers in Japan, effectively laying the prolific home console to rest.

Famitsu (via Kotaku) reports the current batch of PS2 consoles will be the last as Sony will not replenish stock going forward.

The PS2 made its Japanese debut on March 4, 2000 and holds the record for the highest-selling game console of all time, selling over 150 million units since its launch.

In December 2012 reports claimed the PS4 release date was set for spring/autumn 2014, and that the hardware has been codenamed 'Thebes'.
