US Wii U holiday sales 'below expectations' - analyst

Deems new console launch 'disappointing' as availability remains 'abundant'

An industry analyst has deemed the Wii U launch 'disappointing' in relation to holiday sales which apparently failed to meet expectations.

In a recent investor note, Sterne Agee analyst Arvind Bhatia said that sales of the new console at major US retailer GameStop over the holiday season were 'below expectations'.

While many feared stock shortages throughout its launch window, Bhatia also said that Wii U stock at the retailer remained 'abundant', and that software attach rates were "low", but didn't offer any solid figures.

"Our conclusion is the Nintendo Wii U launch has been slightly disappointing," said Bhatia (as quoted by Gamespot).

Nintendo reportedly sold around 40,000 Wii U units during the system's first 48 hours of availability in UK, while Nintendo of America reported 400,000 Wii U sales during the system's first week of availability in the States.
