MCV reports handheld sales also dropped 31.3 per cent, despite the launch of both the PS Vita from Sony and the Nintendo 3DS XL from Nintendo.

Meanwhile in the home console space sales were down by 34.1 per cent, with the Xbox 360 remaining the leading platform. All available consoles sold fewer than they did in 2011, with the exception of the Nintendo Wii U and PS Vita, which launched last year.

Yesterday, it was reported a record-breaking 17.4 million iOS and Android devices were activated on Christmas day, more than on any other day in 2012.

On Christmas day iPads, iPad Minis and Amazon Kindle Fire HD tablets activations outpace smartphones, which typically lead 4:1.
