Nintendo 3DS sales surpasses 10m milestone in Japan

New data suggests two million sales surge in final three months of 2012

Sales of the Nintendo 3DS handheld have surpassed 10 million units in Japan, new data suggests.

The Nintendo handheld, which first launched in February 2011, had reached about 8 million units by the end of September, meaning that a whole fifth of lifetime sales in Japan was accumulated in the October to December period.

Local publication Famitsu appears to have tied the success of the 3DS with the release of Animal Crossing: New Leaf - a game which sold some 800,000 units on its debut.

As of September, Nintendo said it had sold 22 million Nintendo 3DS units worldwide.
