'Piston' not the only Steam Box being shown at CES

Valve bringing "multiple custom hardware prototypes" to show

Valve has revealed that the codenamed 'Piston' prototype is not the only Steam Box-type device it's showing at the CES expo in Vegas this week.

It was confirmed yesterday that Valve has invested in computer manufacturer Xi3 to develop a custom PC in a move to bring Steam to the living room. The compact box is based on Xi3's X7A system, and is expected to launch later this year. Everything we know about the Steam Box is here.

But Valve says 'Piston' is one of many so-called Steam Box prototypes it's bringing to the CES expo.

"Valve will be at CES to meet with hardware and content developers in our booth space," Valve marketing director Doug Lombardi told Polygon. "We are bringing multiple custom (hardware) prototypes as well as some off-the-shelf PCs to our CES meetings," he revealed.

Lombardi said the prototypes are "low-cost, high-performance designs for the living room that are great candidates for Steam and Big Picture", but held off revealing specifics.

"We will be sharing more information to the press and public in the coming months," he added.
