According to a report on Kickstarter activity in 2012, games earned more than any other category.
Games attracted $83 million worth of pledges overall. In total, 2,796 video game projects appeared on Kickstarter in 2012, with only 911 of those succeeding. In total, 561,574 backers supported Kickstarter projects for games.
In all categories, 2,241,475 people pledged a total of $319,786,629 worth of funds during 2012. There were 18,109 successful Kickstarter projects overall. The category with the most funded projects was music.
Kickstarter's potential for games was realised in March when Double Fine raised $3.3 million for a point-and-click adventure game, far exceeding the base goal of $400,000. Since then hordes of studios of varying size have taken to funding their projects through the site.
