CCP Games will launch an open beta for its PS3 exclusive Dust 514 on Jan 22, the company has announced.
The Iceland based MMO specialist has been working on its ambitious free-to-play shooter for more than three years. The console game is designed to interact with PC-bound Eve Online customers, with both groups strategising battles and trading equipment.
Early this year, CCP Games managed to merge the server tech for both Dust 514 and Eve Online, paving the way for a new kind of cross-system communications.
"By uniting Dust 514 and Eve Online on the same single-shard server, CCP has accomplished something unprecedented in videogame history: a single persistent online universe of incredible depth and scale that bridges the PC and console platforms in real time," the company said.
CCP chief executive Hilmar Petursson added: "The launch of the Dust 514 open beta is another step towards our long-term vision for CCP and Eve.
The monetisation model for Dust 514 is to provide the game for free and offer customers various additional items at a cost. A new Mercenary Pack, worth $20, has appeared on Sony's PlayStation Store.
SCEA president Jack Tretton said in a recent video interview that the Dust 514 release date is in October, though this hasn't been officially confirmed.
