Supreme Commander dev 'betting the company' on new Kickstarter

Gas Powered Games seeking $1.1 million for new RTS/RPG hybrid

Gas Powered Games CEO Chris Taylor says he's "betting the company" with a new kickstarter campaign seeking a massive $1.1 million in funding.

The Supreme Commander studio is seeking funding for an action RPG/RTS hybrid called Wildman, which sees players take control of a caveman-esque "wildman" (or woman) pushing to dominate an environment ripe with evolving technology and culture.

Speaking to Gamasutra, Taylor claimed the title will hearken back to the 'glory days' of PC games and his own titles Total Annihilation and Dungeon Siege - and that's why he feels major publishers won't be interested in the project. Instead he's risking a hefty Kickstarter appeal.

"It's not good [if we come up short]. We're all in on this," he told Gama. "We spent all the last dough that we've had, and the last several months working on it. So we're betting the company on it."

Taylor concedes that his statements might "freak people out" when they first hear them, but adds that in reality it's not the first time he's bet the company he founded in 1998.

"I've bet my company on Dungeon Siege, going from 1 to 2, I bet it on Supreme Commander, I bet it on pretty much every big game we've ever made," he said.

"And that's the name of the game, to take risks, as an independent developer. Many studios have closed shop, but they're big boys, they knew what they were doing."

GPG is set to officially unveil Wildman in the next few hours on its website.
