Funcom closing Secret World Beijing studio

Firm also making layoffs at Montreal and North Carolina arms

Funcom is to close its Beijing studio and reduce the headcount at its Montreal one as part of ongoing restructuring efforts.

The company says it will implement a strategy of developing "smaller, high quality online games with more limited budgets and shorter production timelines, while at the same time continuing to support, service and expand its three successfully launched massively multiplayer games".

To that effect, Funcom has established a joint, centralised live team at its studio in Raleigh, North Carolina, whose primary responsibility is to expand and enhance The Secret World, Age of Conan and Anarchy Online.

Funcom said in a statement: "As a natural result of the completion of the development on The Secret World, the Beijing studio, which primary responsibility was delivering art and animation to that project, will be closed down this year and the live team in Raleigh will be equipped with resources to produce visual assets for upcoming updates to the three live games. There has also been a staff reduction at the Raleigh studio in certain departments.

"The restructuring process includes a reduction in headcount at the Montreal studio", which is working on unannounced projects for tablets and mobiles.

Funcom staff cuts last August reportedly affected approximately half of the company's global workforce.
