Skylanders surpasses $1 billion in sales

Including toys and accessories ahead of third game's release

Activision's Skylanders franchise has generated over $1 billion in retail sales, according to a mixture of data from retail monitors the NPD Group and GfK Chart-Track, plus internal estimates from the publisher.

The milestone was achieved through sales of 2011's Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure and last year's Skylanders Giants, as well as associated toys and accessories.

Over 100 million Skylanders toys have now been sold at retail, and last year they generated more than popular action figure lines including Star Wars and Transformers, Activision has claimed.

"The Skylanders franchise became the first kids' videogame IP to cross the $1 billion mark in just 15 months, and I think we are still just starting to realize its potential," said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.

"We knew that the simple, but magical idea, of bringing your toys to life in a video game could change both the video game and the toy industries, and more importantly, change the way kids play."

Activision is set to publish new series entry Skylanders: Swap Force this autumn on home consoles and handheld platforms.

Swap Force's hook is the ability to mix and match the top and bottom halves of toys. So-called Portal Masters will be able to use a mixture of old and new characters to create "250 unique combinations."
