The system moved 281,000 units last month to hold a 44 per cent share of "current-generation console sales", according to NPD data passed along by Microsoft.

The platform holder said earlier this week that global Xbox 360 sales now stand at 76 million (three times the original Xbox's lifetime total), while Kinect has sold 24 million units.

Nintendo and Sony have yet to announce specific hardware sales figures for January. However, North American Wii U sales were reportedly "well under" 100,000 units in January. It is estimated that the console sold between 45,000 and 59,000 units last month.

On the software front, Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 was the top-selling game in the US in January, holding off competition from Far Cry 3 and Just Dance 4, while DMC: Devil May Cry and Ni No Kuni also made their chart debuts.
