The capabilities of the new controller were detailed by Mike Cerny, lead system architect for the Sony PlayStation 4.

As previously reported, the DualShock 4 features a touchpad in its centre body, a 'share' button and a headphone jack for 'enhanced social interactions'. A light bar found along the top of the controller serves as a "simpler, more friendly way to identify players".

The DualShock 4 was developed in tandem with a stereo camera capable of sensing the depth of the environment in front of it and of tracking the position of the controller via the light bar.

Sony says it has also enhanced the controller's rumble, the feel of the joystick and triggers, as well as reduced the controller latency.

According to Cerny, the DualShock 4 was developed closely with "key partners in the development community to enhance the feel of the joystick and the trigger buttons."

By working closely with devs Sony claims to have created a controller that offers "much tighter control over in game actions."
