Total War: Arena revealed - RTS series goes free-to-play

Sega uncovers Creative Assembly's online multiplayer 'spin-off'

Sega's long-running real-time strategy series Total War is going free-to-play for the first time with its latest outing, Total War: Arena.

Revealed at GDC today, Total War: Arena is in development at UK studio Creative Assembly and "will focus entirely on online multiplayer, mixing elements of RTS and MOBA gameplay," according to publisher Sega.

The game will offer "players the chance to pitch history's greatest commanders and their armies against each other in massive team-based battles," it adds, dubbing the game a 'spin-off'.

This will be Creative Assembly's first venture into the free-to-play space.

Forthcoming closed beta tests are planned, and Sega urges those interested in participating to sign up at the game's official site.

The announcement makes no mention of a release window.
