Assassin's Creed 2 named as next free Xbox Live Gold title

Games for Gold service to offer Ubisoft's acclaimed title free to Xbox Live subscribers

Microsoft will offer the four year-old Assassin's Creed 2 for free to Xbox Live Gold subscribers, from July 16, as part of its 'Games With Gold' program.

Microsoft announced the Games for Gold initiative at E3 2013 in June alongside a new "smaller, sleeker" Xbox 360 model. Every Xbox Live Gold member receives two free Xbox 360 game downloads per month, starting July 1, until 2014.

Hidden Path Entertainment's Defense Grid: The Awakening is available for free from July 1 through July 15. It is described as "the definitive Tower Defense Strategy".

On Wednesday, Xbox Live community executive Larry Hyrb announced that Ubisoft's acclaimed stealth action adventure will be the next title to appear on the Games for Gold service.

CVG's Assassin's Creed 2 review, published in 2009, praised the Ubisoft Montreal title as a "massive, brilliant sequel that one-ups the original in almost every way".

In June, Microsoft announced that Halo 3 would also be part of the Games for Gold program.

Microsoft has confirmed an Xbox One release date of November 2013. The PS4 release date is currently scheduled for 'holiday 2013'.
