Evo 2013 breaks viewership records

1.7 million viewers tune in to watch fight tournament

This year's Evolution Championship Series event attracted record viewership numbers, Twitch TV has said.

Speaking to Polygon, Twitch TV marketing exec Matthew DiPietro said 1.7 million unique viewers watched the fighting game tournament's official livestream channels.

Evo, an annual games tournament held in Las Vegas, brings together the most skilled fighting game players from around the world, all who battle in a variety of games including Street Fighter IV, Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Persona 4 Arena, Smash Bros. and more.

Concurrent peak viewership was reportedly at 144,848 during the Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 tournament, while Super Smash Bros Melee attracted up to 134,000 viewers, and Super Street Fighter 4 Arcade Edition pulled in 125,000 viewers.

DiPietro did not specify numbers for Persona 4 Arena or Injustice: Gods Among Us, which were also featured during the tournament.

According to Twitch, the numbers topped previously set records for fighting game tournaments, reportedly 50 percent higher than last year's Evo numbers.

During the event Capcom announced Ultra Street Fighter 4, a major new update for Super Street Fighter 4 that will introduce five new characters, six new stages and new modes and features.
