Earthbound, the cult Nintendo RPG released on the SNES in 1994, has finally been released on Virtual Console in America and Europe.
The game is available today on the American and European Wii U eShop. It's priced at $9.99 in the US, £6.99 in the UK and €9.99 in the rest of Europe.
Earthbound tells the story of a young boy called Ness, who has psychic powers. After a meteorite lands near his home, Ness encounters an alien called Buzz Buzz who asks him to use his powers to defeat Giygas, an alien from a distant galaxy who has the power to influence people using their own evil nature.
Earthbound came packed with a full-length strategy guide when it was originally released on the SNES in America, and this guide will be available both online and via the Wii U GamePad.
Nintendo president Satoru Iwata, who worked on Earthbound when he was a developer for HAL Laboratory, previously explained that the decision to release the game in the west was partly due to the Virtual Console release of the game in Japan, which led to a number of US and European gamers hijacking its Miiverse forum to ask for a release in their country too.
The news of a Wii U Virtual Console re-release is particularly exciting for European gamers, because although Earthbound was originally released on the SNES in Japan and North America, it never arrived in Europe. Now, after 19 years of waiting, it's finally here.
