MercurySteam has confirmed the studio will not develop any further Castlevania titles once Lords of Shadow 2 has released, and will instead focus on a brand new IP.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 producer Dave Cox has revealed at the San Diego Comic Con that the studio will pass on developing further installments in the series.
"We've told Japan headquarters that this is the last one for us," Cox told Destructoid. "There's nothing worse than when somebody's got something to say, and when they've said it, they just keep talking.
"We've got a beginning and end, and it's a cool ending and a cool story. Once we've done that, it's time to say to somebody else 'now it's your turn.'"
MercurySteam has developed both Lords of Shadow and its sequel, as well as the 3DS title Castlevania: Lords of Shadow - Mirror of Fate.
During Comic-Con, Cox said reflected on lessons learned during the development of Lords of Shadow 2 and said the knowledge would be applied to "apply it to our next project", leading many to speculate the studio is working on another Castlevania title.
However, Cox later clarified on Twitter this is not the case: "I never said our next project would be a new Castlevania," he said, "in fact, I said our next project would be something new."
"I didn't tease a new Castlevania. I teased a completely different project."
Cox, who is also head of UK studio at Konami Digital Entertainment, said the company is "extremely happy" with MercurySteam's efforts and "has enormous faith in them as a developer."
According to Cox, although the future of Castlevania after Lords of Shadow 2 "is not clear", MercurySteam hopes to "leave it in the best of health for those who come after".
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow 2 will release for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC this Winter (Summer in the Southern Hemisphere). Check out our analysis of the E3 2013 gameplay below:
