Golden Joysticks 2013 voting begins

The people's games awards return, revamped for modern gaming

Voting has officially opened for the annual Golden Joystick Awards, which in 2013 enters its 31st year as the world's biggest public-voted gaming awards.

The Joysticks were launched by CVG magazine in 1982, with Ultimate's Jetpac taking home the first award. This year's Joysticks shortlist features 15 categories revamped to reflect the diversity of modern gaming.

New additions include Best Indie Game, Studio of the Year and The YouTube Gamer Award, as well as categories introduced to highlight standout innovation, storytelling and visual design, whether on console, PC or mobile.

Perhaps the biggest sign of the times is 2013's lead nominee, the indie sensation Hotline Miami with six nominations, which is followed closely by new intellectual properties Dishonored and The Last of Us with five each.

Elsewhere The Walking Dead and BioShock Infinite compete in the Best Storytelling category, and for the first time in Golden Joystick history you can vote for your Best Platform of the Year - console, digital marketplace or handheld.

The Joysticks are the world's longest running games awards, but more importantly they're the only annual awards voted for by the public, amassing more than four million votes in 2012.

With your votes, we hope the 31st Golden Joysticks ceremony will deliver the most relevant and exciting awards yet, and showcase the passion and innovation that's ripe across the industry.

SLIDESHOW: 31 years of Joysticks

The 2013 Golden Joystick Awards ceremony will take place at The Westminster Park Plaza on Friday, October 25, hosted by comedian Ed Byrne, with live coverage right here on CVG.
