Five titles confirmed for PS3-to-PS4 download code offer

But PS3 disc will be required to play PS4 game

Sony has confirmed the final details for a promotion that will allow gamers to get PS4 versions of specific PS3 games for around $10/£10.

As previously detailed for Battlefield 4, physical retail versions of select PS3 games will come with a voucher containing a code that will allow gamers to download a digital version of that game on PS4 for a small fee.

Four games will participate in the initiative in North America: Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, Call of Duty: Ghosts, Watch Dogs, and Battlefield 4. In Europe only, NBA 2K14 will also be supported.

The fee to download the PS4 version of those games will be $9.99/£9.99/€9.99, except for NBA 2K14, which will cost £11.99/€14.99.

Importantly, however, you will need to insert the PS3 disc into your PS4 to "activate and play the PS4 version" at all times.

The redeem codes will also expire in early 2014. As Sony explains, "You'll need to redeem your code and make the purchase before January 31st, 2014 (for Assassin's Creed IV and Watch Dogs), March 28th (for Battlefield 4), or March 31st (for Call of Duty: Ghosts and NBA 2K14) in order to participate.

You will not need to buy a PS4 before those dates - the code redemption and purchase of the PS4 title can be done via PS3. Then you can download the PS4 games when you eventually get a PS4.
