The CVG team would like to apologise to readers affected by Wednesday's site problems, in which our servers crashed following a surge in traffic.
The reason for our technical hiccup was primarily down to the demand for Green Man Gaming's Golden Joysticks deal, which offers a free game - either Mafia 2 or Civilization V - to everyone who votes in this year's awards.
Our servers are always prepared for a vast audience, but on Wednesday the demand was as high as one million page views per hour, which meant we had to shut down some site features (such as comments) in order to keep the website online.
We apologise that those features you enjoy were suspended in these circumstances. Our technical team continues to work to restore full functionality to the site, but in the meantime the new user registration system remains switched off in order to promptly deliver news and editorial to our core readers.
We aim to have the full Golden Joysticks site, comments and registration systems restored as quickly as we can, but rest assured there will still be plenty of time to vote and claim your free game, between now and the close of voting which is currently scheduled for Sunday October 20.
Those who have already voted in the Joysticks can claim their free game now over on the Green Man Gaming Page.
Thanks for your patience,
