The Amazing Spider-Man 2 confirmed for current and next-gen consoles

Beenox-developed installment will release in May 2014

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 has been announced by Activision, and is scheduled to release alongside the next Spider-Man film in May 2014.

As with its 2012 predecessor The Amazing Spider-Man, the sequel will feature open world, third-person action gameplay.

Announced at New York Comic Con at the weekend, Beenox representatives said the game's Manhattan map has been expanded to facillitate greater player freedom, while new abilities, upgrades and challenges are also promised.

While the game will tie-in with the cinema release of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, it will feature a distinct narrative as well as a new "Hero or Menace" morality system, which rewards good deeds and punishes bad. Players will also control Peter Parker.

The game is expected to launch alongside the film in May 2014. It will release for PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PC, Wii U and 3DS.

The sequel will follow last year's The Amazing Spider-Man, which scored 7.7 in CVG's review. "Definitely fun, definitely playable - but Arkham City can rest easy," we said.

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 will release in cinemas on May 2.
