New 'iPad Air' confirmed for November 1 release

Plus, new iPad Mini revealed, both with 64-bit A7 processors and Retina screens

Apple has unveiled that its latest flagship tablet, the iPad Air, will release in US, UK and dozens of other countries worldwide on November 1.

Phil Schiller, senior vice president of worldwide marketing at Apple confirmed the new device at the company's October conference on Tuesday.

The device will be 20 per cent thinner and feature a slim outer bezel that's 43 narrower than the previous iPad.

It'll feature a 9.7-inch Retina display, and will weight just 1 pound, compared with the previous model's 1.4lb weight.

The new A7 will sit at its core - Apple's new 64-bit chip that debuted in the iPhone 5S. This will make it twice as fast as the current iPad, said Schiller, and eight times faster than the first-yen iPad.

The iPad Air will be the first iOS device to feature MIMO tech (Multiple-In-Multiple-Out) for Wifi, allowing for transfer speeds of up to 300Mbps.

The outer case will pack a 5MP 'iSight' camera supporting 1080p video and feature dual microphones for stereo sound.

Apple touts up to 10 hours of battery life.

The iPad Air will replace the current flagship iPad in Apple's tablet lineup, and will start at $499 for the WiFi only model in black, grey and white trims. Celular-enabled models will start at $629. The iPad 2 will remain available for $399.

The new iPad Mini, also unveiled today (pictured right), will get a high-resolution 7.9 inch 'Retina' display with the same resolution as its bigger brother, at 2,048 x 1,536 pixels.

It also gets the 64-bit A7 chip that promises CPU performance four-times faster than its predecessor, and up to eight times faster graphics.

MiMo tech and a 5MP camera were also confirmed. It appears neither of the new iPads will feature Apple's fingerprint sensor, Touch ID, as was previously rumoured.

The new iPad Mini will start at $399, with silver, white, black and grey models available. It will launch on an unspecified date in 'November'.

The current iPad Mini will remain on sale at $299.
