PlanetSide 2 PS4 release date is 'early 2014'

SOE boss John Smedley reveals PlayStation 4 plan

Free-to-play MMO FPS PlanetSide 2 will arrive on PlayStation 4 in early 2014, according to a key executive at the game's developer.

John Smedley, company president at Sony Online Entertainment, pencilled in a PS4 release date during a video interview with Bloomberg.

"We're helping the Sony PlayStation 4 launch on November 15 by releasing DC Universe Online at launch, and we're following up that early next year with our next game, Planetside 2, on PS4," he said.

PlanetSide 2, released first in November 2012 and has had a consistent stream of updates and new content released for it since.

The PS4 version will not be cross-compatible with PC, the game's developer announced recently.

In August, Sony Online Entertainment revealed the game's new fourth continent; a boggy swamp-like environment called Hossin.

Sony Online Entertainment has also announced a huge visual and gameplay overhaul for its free-to-play MMO DC Universe Online.

In anticipation of its PS4 release it has been subject to "a sweeping, game-wide graphical upgrade", and "a massive design effort to polish and remaster the core leveling game".

DC Universe Online will also arrive on PS4 "within the console's launch window". It is joined by a number of other MMOs including Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and Elder Scrolls Online.
