DC Universe Online will rely on the same servers for both PS3 and PS4, meaning users will be able to collaborate and compete across both platforms.
The news was confirmed in a Q&A with DC Universe Online senior creative director Jens Andersen, who answered in the affirmative that users on PS4 can play with PS3 users and vice versa.
"We wanted to make sure that the release of DCUO on PS4 was not a homewrecker. We know there are lots of people from lots of different walks of life that find themselves in the same league, and enjoy playing with one another in game," Andersen wrote.
"We realized some people would be early adopters of the new platform, and others would wait to buy one. We felt it was very important to maintain cohesion within the community, so we decided to let them play on the same servers."
The studio is targeting a 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second for the PS4 edition, which will be available at launch on the next-gen console.
Sony Online Entertainment recently issued a patch to the PS3 edition in preperation for the launch of the PS4 version. The patch introduced improvements to core gameplay and implemented "numerous design improvements".
PlayStation 4 will release November 15 in the US and November 29 in Europe and Australia.
