Warner Bros Interactive has announced a new cross-generation, multiplatform game set in J R R Tolkien's fictional world of Middle-earth.
Middle-earth: Shadow Of Mordor is a new story set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings. It puts players in control of Talion, a "valiant ranger" whose family is killed in front of him the night Sauron and his army return to Mordor.
After he is killed, Talion is resurrected by a spirit of vengeance and, given Wraith abilities, heads into Mordor to enact revenge against those who killed him and his family.
"Players will explore the dark and very personal theme of vengeance in a world where decisions have a consequence, and those consequences persist even after death," said Warner Bros' senior vice president for production and development Samantha Ryan.
"The game introduces new gameplay mechanics to the action genre, creating opportunities for emergent and customised gameplay that will be rewarding for players."
The main example of this is the game's new Nemesis System, a new feature in which enemy relationships and characteristics are shaped by the actions and decisions the player makes throughout the game. When the player re-encounters certain enemies, they will remember what the player did before and react accordingly.
According to Warner Bros, the Nemesis System means "gamers are able to craft their own battles, enemies and rewards within the dynamic world that remembers and adapts to their choices, delivering a unique experience to every player".
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is in development at bMonolith Productions, previously responsible for the Condemned and F.E.A.R. series, as well as Guardians of Middle-earth and Gotham City Imposters.
The game will be released on PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.
