Sony is rumoured to have acquired the Crash Bandicoot rights from Activision.
As reported on Reddit, Activision this week took down the official Crash Bandicoot website, while all Crash Bandicoot references have been removed from its web properties. An archived version of Activision's Crash Bandicoot site can be found here.
Further evidence suggesting Sony intends to reboot the series on PlayStation is the Crash Bandicoot Easter Egg spotted in the recent PS4 launch trailer, a still of which can be seen below (left hand side).
Originally created by Naughty Dog for Sony, Crash Bandicoot was a hit series on PSone. The rights to the series have subsequently been held by a number of different publishers who have failed to replicate the success the franchise enjoyed in its heyday.
The last console-based Crash Bandicoot game was Activision's Crash: Mind Over Mutant, which launched on PS2, Xbox 360 and Wii in 2008.
Approached for comment, one Sony official told Twitter users to direct questions about the series to Activision.
@shinobi602 Activision owns the IP, so you should ask them about it...— Adam Boyes (@amboyes) November 22, 2013
But according to a VideoGamer editor:
Earlier today I asked Activision whether it still held the rights to the Crash Bandicoot license. Answer: "No comment."— David Scammell (@VG_Dave) November 22, 2013
