Kickstarter project The Mandate has reached its $500,000 target with three days to spare.
The Mandate is being developed by Perihelion Interactive, a Sacramento-based studio including staff who have previously worked on the likes of Assassin's Creed 1 and 2, Mafia 2, Alan Wake and Far Cry 2 and 3.
The space RPG puts players in the role of a captain of a Mandate starship and tasks them with building a crew as they explore the galaxy.
"Looking back to all the TV and Movies that inspired us, like Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica or Firefly," the initial Kickstarter pitch read, "we realised games are missing something integral: a crew. A ship without a crew feels hollow and meaningless, so we've taken space travel to the next level. The dangers of space should not only test your metal, but your flesh."
The goal set was $500,000 but at the time of writing the total pledge amount has reached $539,574.
The project nearly hit a snag when a $10,000 backer pulled out just as the target was about to be reached. "This was only a minor setback and we quickly recovered but this kind of scam could have been a major blow to a smaller campaign," read a statement on the game's Kickstarter page.
In order to "turn something negative into a fun little community event", the studio has decided it will run a mock trial where other Kickstarter backers can decide if a virtual version of the backer is guilty of the charges put to him, and what his 'punishment' should be.
The Mandate will start proper Alpha and Beta in 2014, and is scheduled for release in early 2015.
