It's a tragic irony that in this, the year of Luigi, Danny Wells has died.
To gamers of a certain age, Wells was Luigi. Starring in the Super Mario Bros Super Show alongside Captain Lou Albano (also deceased), Wells gave life to Nintendo's character in two different ways.
Not only did Wells play Luigi in the show's live-action sections, he also voiced Luigi in its animated cartoon sections. Check the video below to see him in action in the first ever episode.
In total, Wells played Luigi in 65 episodes of the Super Mario Bros Super Show, from 1989 to 1991. During this time he acted, as Luigi, alongside such '80s guest celebrities as Elvira, Magic Johnson, Nicole Eggert, Cyndi Lauper, Ghostbusters star Ernie Hudson and WWF wrestler Sergeant Slaughter.
As well as his role as Luigi, Wells starred in 99 other TV shows and movies, including Magnolia and The Jeffersons. He was also the voice of Captain Partridge in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory.
But it's as Luigi that older gamers will always remember him, and so it's with great sadness - in this, the year of Luigi - that we say goodbye to Danny Wells.
