62 more Blockbuster store closures confirmed

Joint administrators announce that 427 jobs will be lost this week

Blockbuster UK is to shut a further 62 stores this week, resulting in the loss of 427 jobs.

The affected stores will be closed by Sunday December 8, joint administrators Simon Thomas and Nick O'Reilly of Moorfields Corporate Recovery LLP said.

In October, Blockbuster entered into administration for the second time this year.

The administrators said today: "Unfortunately we have still not received any acceptable offers so as a result we may be forced to close the remaining 91 stores affecting 808 employees."

In November, trade publication MCV claimed that Blockbuster UK operations boss Dave Potter had informed store managers that every Blockbuster UK outlet was is in line to be closed. A separate source told the site this would happen by December 20.

The second collapse of Blockbuster UK marks the struggles that game and film retailers face in a marketplace increasingly dominated by online content and digital downloads.

Fellow UK media retailer HMV also fell into administration in January. It was acquired by Hilco in April.
