Destiny release date confirmed

Bungie's first post-Halo epic coming September

Bungie has confirmed a Destiny release date of September 9 worldwide.

Additionally, the studio has announced that the Destiny beta will kick off "in the summer of 2014" and - as previously announced - will be available first on PS3 and PS4.

Destiny is the work of former Halo studio Bungie - an ambitious always-online multiplayer shooter cast in a futuristic sci-fi setting. Set for release on PS3, Xbox 360, PS4 and Xbox One, Destiny sees players take the role of a Guardian of the last safe city on Earth, fighting mysterious alien foes on Earth and beyond in a bid to reclaim mankind's lost territory.

Along with a load of new details announced earlier this week, Bungie has confirmed that "one or two new details" will be announced at Spike TV's VGX event on Saturday, December 7, along with another look at the game. VGX streaming begins at 6pm ET / 3pm PT / 11pm GMT.

"Destiny has always represented a new beginning for our team," said the studio in its release date announcement. "It was born from brave possibilities. We dreamed of a renewed and independent Bungie. We found partners willing to bet big on some crazy new ideas with us.

"We first shared the design pillars of Destiny less than one year ago. We promised to redefine what players should expect from a Bungie game. We said we wanted to change the way people play games together. We set our bar high. For us, Destiny represents a once in a lifetime opportunity.

"Since then, Destiny has continued to reveal its promise. Every new build brings us closer to our original vision. With those goals in sight, we intend to use every moment from now until the release of the game to ensure that Destiny lives up to your expectations, and our own."

Bungie concluded with a gesture of thanks to those looking forward to the game.

"The early support and enthusiasm for Destiny has been inspiring and humbling. We believe this is the right decision for our game, our studio, and our passionate community. Thank you for coming along with us on this adventure."
