A new arena: Fighting game tournament introduces staring matches

This past weekend Essington, Pennsylvania played host to the Northeast Championships 14, a fighting game tournament where the best-of-the-best gather to duke it out in Super Street Fighter IV: Arcade Edition, Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3, Killer Instinct, Dead or Alive and more.

The event was attended by the cream of the fighting game community crop, with names like EVO World Tournament champions NYChrisG, Filipino Champ, Justin Wong, PR Balrog, Flocker and Ricky Ortiz entering all the big-ticket tournaments.

It was watched by over 250,000 people, and archived footage of the whole thing can be seen here. But This year's hottest, most heavily anticipated contest event was an unlikely one: a stare-out match.

In addition to trading virtual blows, seasoned fighting game veterans also squared up for a battle of ocular fortitude and tests of stoicity. Watch the highlights below:
