All remaining Blockbuster UK stores to close before Christmas

91 stores to shut in the coming days, resulting in 808 job losses

Blockbuster UK is to shut the remainder of its stores by Monday December 16.

The 91 store closures will result in the loss of 808 jobs, joint administrators Simon Thomas and Nick O'Reilly of Moorfields Corporate Recovery LLP said today.

All remaining stock will be sold by Sunday December 15 with discounts of up to 90 per cent off regular sale prices.

The joint administrators commented: "It is with regret that we have to make today's announcement, we appreciate this is a difficult time for all concerned and would like to thank staff for their professionalism and support over the past month.

"Unfortunately, we were unable to secure a buyer for the group as a going concern and as a result had to take the regrettable action to close the remaining stores."

In October, Blockbuster entered into administration for the second time this year, reflecting the struggles that game and film retailers face in a marketplace increasingly dominated by digital downloads.

Fellow UK media retailer HMV also fell into administration in January. It was acquired by Hilco in April.
