The Vanishing of Ethan Carter's environments explored in animated screenshots

First look at "weird fiction horror" game from former People Can Fly developers

Three new animated 'gifs' from The Vanishing of Ethan Carter demonstrate the "weird fiction horror" title's natural environments and strange happenings.

The first-person exploration game from The Astronauts, a Warsaw-based studio founded by three former members of Gears of War: Judgment dev People Can Fly, lets players assume the role of a detective with the supernatural ability to visualize the scenes of people's deaths.

The scene's settings were created using "photogrammetric technology," according to The Astronauts' blog:

"Rest assured we will be talking a whole lot more about it in January, but in short, we believe it's the future for a lot of indie studios interested in photo-realistic worlds. The technology does not eliminate the need for artists and never will, but it allows faster acquisition of high quality in-game assets."

Photogrammetry refers to making measurements from photographs; it can be used to create accurate three-dimensional models of real-world objects. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter was first revealed in February and originally planned for release in 2013.
